The Types of Leather and Its Cleaning!

Leather is different from other fabrics and is used to manufacture jackets and other items of clothing. When it comes to the cleaning and protection of clothing made of leather, proper care is needed. For the best protection and cleaning, you need to identify the type of leather. For the identification of type, you must read the manufacturer's label first.

The manufacturer's label does not only contain instructions for the caring of an item but it also contains details about the type of leather. When it comes to the type of leather, there are many finishes and every type has different properties.

Aniline Finish

Aniline is a type of leather which uses full grain leather and this type is treated with chemical. Aniline maintains the natural grain & tone of the hide and the type is specifically used to manufacture tan or brown leather jackets.

Suede Finish

Suede is a bit similar to Nappa but is less durable. This finish uses underside of the split grain hide and gets easily stained. You need to use an appropriate protectant in order to remove stains from the clothing of this finish.

Nappa Finish

Nappa uses full grain sheep or lambskin and is considered one of the expensive types. Since, Nappa is very soft & durable leather, it is rated very high among other types.

Nubuck

Nubuck uses full grain cattle hide and a bit similar to suede finish. Nubuck is considered one of the best types and it is also very expensive. This type of leather is susceptible to water stains and a proper care is needed when it comes to protection.

The above four types are commonly used to manufacture stylish and high quality leather jackets. Every type of leather has its own characteristics as stated above and jackets manufactured from each type can vary in price too. As every type is different, therefore, it requires different methods of care.

Cleaning of Leather Jackets

When it comes to the cleaning of leather jackets, you need to rely on specialized leather cleaning products. The surface of the jacket should be wiped off with a wet cloth and the cleaner should be applied carefully. Once the cleaner is applied, wipe the jacket again to remove any residue and leave it to dry.

When it comes to types, Aniline jackets are easy to clean because they are not really susceptible to stains. Suede and Nubuck are more soft and prone to staining and this is the reason, more care is needed to clean them.
